DAY 4: Mon 30 April |
YPRES |
| This morning for those that would like to, there is a walking tour of Ypres, beginning at 9.00am. The remainder of today is at leisure. We suggest a visit to the Cloth Hall and ‘In Flanders Fields’ Museum, or wander the sign posted 2.6 km ramparts route. (Takes a leisurely 90 minutes). The ramparts of Ypres were built in the 13th century and are the best preserved in the country. Initially, the ramparts were little more than an earth wall with moats, now with advanced fortifications, moats and islands they have become more extensive than the city they once protected. The ramparts also played an important role during the Great War experience of many Australian troops. (B) |
| DAY 5: Tue 1 May |
NORMANDY |
| After breakfast, we drive from Ypres to Normandy. We will make a stop to purchase some lunch along the way. Upon arrival in Normandy we will visit the Pegasus Museum and the famous Pegasus Bridge, captured by the British Airborne early on the morning of D-Day. Later we will check into our hotel in the fishing village of Port en Bessin. (B) |
| DAY 6: Wed 2 May |
NORMANDY |
| Today is a full day of visits, including Omaha landing beach and the massive American Cemetery (Colleville sur Mer, as seen in "Saving Private Ryan”), along with many more World War II battlefield sites and other places of interest. (B, L) |
| DAY 7: Thu 3 May |
NORMANDY |
| Today we have a full day tour to discover Mont-Saint-Michel and its abbey on the border between Normandy and Brittany, one of the first sites to obtain UNESCO World Heritage listing. See this impressive accomplishment of medieval architecture. We will also visit the Bayeux Museum to see the famous Bayeux Tapestry. This evening, we will have a special dinner to say goodbye to the battlefields. (B, D) |
| Following our visits to D-Day sites including the historical seaside town of Arromanche we make a brief stop in Paris to farewell those fellow travellers who are not continuing on to the Somme. We arrive in Arras in the early evening. There are restaurants nearby for dinner. (B) |
| Today we visit the Franco-Australian Museum at the School at Villers Bretonneux, the Australian National Memorial and Adelaide Cemetery from where the remains of the Unknown Soldier were exhumed and now rest in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. We will then visit the quaint town of Peronne including entry to the acclaimed ‘Museum of the Great War’. A visit will also be made to the 2nd Division Memorial and to the scene of "one of Australia’s finest feats of arms” in the taking of Mont St Quentin. in the later stages of the war in 1918. En route back to Arras we will visit Bullecourt where you will see the ‘Slouch Hat’ Memorial & nearby Australian Memorial Park with its statue of the bronze ‘Bullecourt Digger’. (B, L) |
| We spend today visiting some of the important sites in the Somme. In and around the village of Pozieres we visit the Australian 1st Division Memorial and the famous Windmill site on the ridge where it was said that "Australians fell more thickly than on any other battlefield of the war”. We pass by Mouquet Farm on our way to the huge Thiepval Memorial commemorating some 73,000 ‘missing’ British troops. We also visit the preserved trenches at the Newfoundland Memorial Park at nearby Beaumont Hamel and proceed on to the site of Lochnagar Crater near Albert. This massive crater resulted from the detonation of a powerful mine marking the commencement of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916. Other sites of major significance include the Australian Corps Memorial at Le Hamel, where Monash first led the Australians on a very successful mission involving tanks, artillery, and infantry. We also visit the Adelaide Cemetery (where the Unknown Soldier was exhumed and now rests in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra), and see glimpses of the crash site of the Red Baron. (B, L) |
| DAY 11: Mon 7 May |
TOUR ENDS |
| This morning we walk (15 minutes) to visit the amazing Wellington Tunnels to discover the underground life of the Commonwealth Armies. Here we will see tunnels dug during the Middle Ages, and used in World War 1. They were expanded and linked by ANZAC Tunnellers within the ancient quarries where 24,000 soldiers were quartered before the Battle of Arras in 1917. Your tour ends today around noon. (B) |
